Shi Tao, born into the Ming dynasty imperial clan, became a Buddhist monk and was hailed as Daoji in the Qing dynasty. Dedicated his whole life to studying Zen Buddhism, he is an excellent painter, especially good at landscape painting.
Most landscape painting works of Shi has depicted the scenes of Mount Huangshan located in the Anhui Province of China. The cascading mountains, winding rivers and floating clouds were vividly presented with complicated composition in his artwork.

Shi lived in Yangzhou in the last years of his life, when his sophisticated painting techniques and great enthusiasm in creation lifted his artistic achievements to a new level, with remarkable influence on the “Eight Eccentric Artists” of Yangzhou.

In this lecture, Zhang Changhong, professor and PhD supervisor of the Department of Art History, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, will share with us the love and sorrow of Shi Tao.
Zhang Changhong
Zhang Changhong gained his PhD from China Academy of Art, and is a visiting scholar of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Harvard University. Now, he serves as a professor and PhD supervisor of the Department of Art History, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University.
His publications include My Method: Studies on Social Acceptance of the Art of Shi Tao (我用我法：石涛艺术与社会接受研究) (Shanghai Literature & Art Publishing House, 2019), Art and Business: Studies on the Sponsorship of Anhui Businessmen on Arts in Late Ming Dynasty and Early Qing Dynasty (品鉴与经营：明末清初徽商艺术赞助研究) (Peking University Press, 2010). He compiled the Commentary on the Ancient Calligraphy Theory in China - Qing Dynasty Volume (中国历代书法理论评注·清代卷) (Hangzhou Publishing House, 2016) and has published over 50 papers and book reviews on art academic journals including Literature and Art Studies, Cultural Relics, Palace Museum Journal, and Art Research.
With the idea of building “an art museum without walls and fluid art academy”, the Pearl Art Museum has delivered a series of “Read Art in Books” lectures since the end of September in 2019.
“Read Art in Books” is designed to invite an expert each time to tell an art story with a book and instruct in systematic and interesting art appreciation. Based on the sharing from the experts, it enables ordinary people to have a glimpse of the most advanced and classic art research and works and have the knowledge and mind-set for appreciating art works.
