On August 14, the series lectures of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai”, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, were declared open on site. Pearl Art Museum was honored to have invited the participation of Gérard Audinet, director of Maison de Victor Hugo and joint curator of Hugo exhibitions, Cheng Zenghou, famous French translator and Hugo scholar, and Li Dandan, executive director of the Pearl Art Museum and joint curator of Hugo’s exhibitions. By initiating with “Victor Hugo: The Inner World of a Genius”, the speakers unfolded the unparalleled exciting life experience of Hugo and his friendly ties with China.
On August 15, the second stop of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai” designed by Pearl Art Museum was launched in Pudong Library in Shanghai, the sub-branch venue of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair. Pearl Art Museum and Pudong Library in Shanghai were honored to have invited the participation of professor Yuan Xiaoyi, dean of School of Foreign Languages, East China Normal University, and famous French translator. Starting with the popular novel Les Misérables, professor Yuan Xiaoyi made Hugo as a symbol of the times known to readers by probing into this piece of classical work. Meanwhile, she would further present to readers the value, formation, and development of 19th-century French literature, and the development of romantic literature at modern times.
On August 16, the third stop of the series lectures of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai”, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, focused on the theme of “Hugo’s novel and its translation”. Pearl Art Museum and Alliance Française de Shanghai were honored to have invited the participation of Zheng Kelu, professor and Ph.D. advisor of Shanghai Normal University and famous French translator, to present an analysis of masterpieces of Hugo and discuss the skills of French literature translation.
On August 17, the fourth stop of the series lectures of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai”, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, was launched in Minhang Public Library in Shanghai. Pearl Art Museum and Minhang Public Library were honored to have invited the participation of Li Zhiqing, professor of College of Foreign Languages at Ocean University of China and famous French educator, to give an introduction of Hugo, the recognized leader of French Romantic School, and his contribution to French literature and the world literature. Focus was then shifted to François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand, the founder of romanticism in French literature in the same era, and readers would be informed of the development history of romanticism and appreciate the beauty of literature.
On August 18, the fifth stop of the series lectures of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai”, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, was held to make an “intellectual” Hugo known to readers. Pearl Art Museum was honored to have invited the participation of Lv Yimin, professor and Ph.D. advisor of School of History in Zhejiang University, and vice chairman of Chinese Society of French Historical Studies. Beginning with the state funeral of Victor Hugo that drew worldwide attention, Lv Yimin looked back on the genius – Hugo’s performances in this period, especially his demonstrated talents, mindset, and bravery, and explored the reasons behind the “supreme honor” awarded to Hugo after his death by the French government and lots of grand commemorations held to pay homage to him.
On August 19, the sixth stop of the series lectures of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai”, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, centered on “Hugo’s drama”, a topic strange to Chinese audience. Pearl Art Museum and JIC Books were honored to have invited the participation of Ivan Ruviditch, professor assistant at the Center for Comparative Literature and World Literature in Shanghai Normal University and drama director. Ivan Ruviditch introduced the “dramatist” Hugo to readers by taking “dramas and films” as a medium for appreciation of his literature and the spiritual power and influence of Hugo’s dramas in present times.
On August 20, the seventh stop of “Seven Days of Hugo in Shanghai” designed by Pearl Art Museum, as part of the major activities of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, was launched in Shanghai Library, the sub-branch venue of 2019 Shanghai Book Fair. Pearl Art Museum and Shanghai Library were honored to have invited the participation of Yu Zhongxian, professor of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, judge of Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award. Professor Yu Zhongxian looked into the connection between Notre-Dame de Paris and the Notre Dame Cathedral and the views and comments of Hugo as a writer and politician on social problems at that time. His speech would encourage the public to review the classics and reflect upon the role and power of literature.
